Periactin (Cyproheptadine)
General information
Periactin is a medicine prescribed for treatment of symptoms of allergy such as hay fever and sickness, vomiting, nausea, dizziness. It is an antihistamine. It works blocking the effects of histamine, produced by the body. Also the medicine can be prescribed for treatment of cluster headache and to stimulate appetite in underweight people.
Directions
It is recommended to take the medicine as it was prescribed by your doctor. Take it with a big glass of water. Do not exceed your recommended dose. Usually the recommended dose for adults is 4 mg 3 times per day. It can vary up to 20 mg per day. The recommended dose for children is 4 mg per day.
Precautions
Use the medicine carefully. It can make you drowsy or impair your coordination. Before starting your treatment tell you doctor if you have bronchial asthma, glaucoma, an overactive thyroid gland, high blood pressure, heart disease, or circulatory problems.
Contraindications
Breastfeeding women, patients with sensitivity to cyproheptadine hydrochloride or drugs with similar chemical structure; pyloroduodenal obstruction, stenosing peptic ulcer, symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy, predisposition to urinary retention or bladder neck obstruction; therapy for an acute asthmatic attack; glaucoma can't use the medicine.
Possible side effect
Drug interaction
Periactin can interact with the following medicines: selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam); isocarboxazid (Marplan); phenelzine (Nardil); rasagiline (Azilect); tranylcypromine (Parnate).
Missed dose
If you forgot to take your dose in time, please do it as soon as you remember. But do not take if it is too late or almost time for your next dose. Do not take double or extra doses. Take your usually dose next day in the same regularly time.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are extreme drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations, very dry mouth, large pupils, pale skin, vomiting, or fainting.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture, kids and pets.
