Astelin (Azelastine)
General information
Astelin is an antihistamine nasal spray. It is used to relieve nasal symptoms such as runny/itching/stuffy nose, sneezing, and post-nasal drip caused by seasonal allergies and other allergic conditions. It works by blocking certain natural substances called histamines that are responsible for allergic symptoms.
Directions
Take Astelin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended dose of it for treating nasal allergies (known as allergic rhinitis) in adults and children age 12 and older is one or two sprays in each nostril twice daily. For treatment of vasomotor rhinitis: Use 2 sprays in each nostril two times a day.
Precautions
Before taking Astelin you should talk with your doctor if you have kidney problems. The medication can cause drowsiness. Avoid driving a car or doing any activity that requires alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages. It is not recommended in children under 12 years of age.
Contraindications
Do not take Astelin if you have allergy to any antihistamines, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have swelling, dizziness, rash, trouble breathing, itching, sleepiness, headache, blurred vision, eye pain, muscle aches, blood in the urine, sore throat, weight gain, nausea, nosebleeds. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: antihistamines (diphenhydramine), medicine for sleep (zolpidem), psychiatric medicines (chlorpromazine, amitriptyline), narcotic pain relievers (codeine), anti-anxiety drugs (diazepam), anti-seizure drugs (phenobarbital), muscle relaxants, tranquilizers. Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are seizures, decreased muscle tone, salivation.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
